SEA to See Freedom in PA Survey

As VietLead and organizations across the country have worked to end Southeast deportations, we have found that politicians and our greater community don't know about our experiences as refugees facing the injustice of the criminal justice and deportation systems. Community based research is one way we are able to combat dominant narratives about our community that make the experiences of Southeast Asians impacted by criminal deportation invisible.

The SEA to See Freedom in PA Survey is a survey that gathers data and testimonies of formerly incarcerated Southeast Asian Philadelphians and Pennsylvanians facing deportation. The survey findings will be used in a report that will be shared to educate our community and people who have the power to stop our deportations.

We need your help sharing this survey to your friends, family, and community members. We know there is a lot of stigma in our community about deportations, but without sharing our stories and experiences, we cannot fight for our freedom.

You are eligible to participate in the survey if you:

  • Identify as Southeast Asian (you and/or your family is from the countries of Cambodia, Laos, or Vietnam)

  • Are formerly incarcerated

  • Are facing deportation

  • Have a case based in Philadelphia or Pennsylvania

This survey is completely anonymous and should only take 10 minutes to complete. Questions? Contact VietLead by emailing claire.nguyen@vietlead.org or texting 267-713-9089.

SEA to See Freedom in PA Preliminary Report

From January to April 2022, our Community Defense team was able to gather 15 survey responses from community members directly impacted by criminal deportation. Using this initial data, we created this preliminary report, which we hope to expand upon after we gather more data through September 2022. From just 15 responses, we have already been able to visualize the complexity and vastness of our community experiences, especially the experiences of our formerly incarcerated Southeast Asian Pennsylvanians impacted by deportation.
